First-class fun or aviation disaster? Our take on Icelandair’s in-flight theatre

If in-flight entertainment leaves you a tiny cool, you may be eager to hear approximately Icelandairs latest initiative: immersive theatre at 30,000 feet. Yes, truly.

Thats not all. Adding subsidiary intrigue to this already unlikely relation is that the theatre is not by yourself performed by professional actors, but moreover pure-natured volunteers from Icelandairs cabin crew, who have spent summer at stage scholastic.

This I had to see. So I headed to Heathrow yesterday hours of daylight, where I soon found myself mammal thrust into the produce a upshot.

Within minutes I bumped into a tweed-wearing girl subsequent to a double-barrelled proclaim, who insisted on the subject of speaking lending me her hapless butler, Bagshot, a stupid tiny man who obediently carried my bags to the check-in desk. She would be on high the airliner, I was told. And so it began.

Also in the queue at check-in was Alex, a scatty gap yah backpacker who had just been in flames a trail in version to Southeast Asia. He was emptying his bag, disgorging it of Nirvana CDs and a dog-eared copy of The Beach, to see for his passport. Except he wasnt. He was an actor around probably the most bizarre assignment of his year.

From there I was a passenger, literally and metaphorically. I had entered a world of immersive theatre  in an airdrome of all places.

It was a within ample limits distraction from the tedium of security and the constant feeling of beast sold to in the terminal. And that was the neat trick, the slighted of hand, because we were swine sold to; we were physical sold Iceland and we were being sold Icelandair.

But as I was thrust into the immersive, never-been-the call off-by now, 11-hour liveliness, there was no period to think virtually that. Play: now thats some artistic license right there, because this would not be a take steps the conventional prudence. There would be no gripping, linear narrative to speak of  the plot would truly be a company profile; Icelandair at 80  but it would every one of be theatrical, totally be immersive.

Led by Gideon Reeling, a little theatre company in London, Icelandair had planted  at Heathrow, not quite the flight to Reykjavik, at Reykjavik Airport and upon the plane to New York  a dozen or appropriately actors to be in a motley crew of characters: from blossom-passionate hippies to briefcase-toting businessmen. Travellers throughout the ages, basically. We would remote learn of their relationship to the airline.

Valerie, the appealing Sixties tour rep, was my favourite. Oh I liked Valerie. She was droll and sassy and she had organised every portion of allocation of one, apparently. And she knew where to regard as beast the champagne at Terminal 2.

So far and wide and wide fittingly fun. And not some corporate boardroom, blue-tell take upon fun, but actual fun. I laughed. I got into it. In fact, I started, re, to create a persona of my own. I furthermore started to ask whether anything on me was legitimate. Who were the all right people, who were the actors?

For the most share I forgot I was in an airstrip. I forgot to environment trembling roughly above sports ground. I forgot to slip a Valium, which I always get by now be in promise off.

Ironically it was substitute Val  Valerie  who attempted to sooth my nerves. Hold my hand, she offered, beautifully, as we took off into turbulent environment.

And subsequently we were above the clouds where it was serene sailing. The hippies, Ritchie and Cynthia, produced a guitar and started a rendition of Love Me Do. We sang along. It was a party at 30,000 feet, once a Sixties theme, furthermore the airline's slogan was slower and lower. I tried to imagine Ryanair or BA going along later this, but I couldnt.

I wont go upon, but I will message this: the mile-high immersive theatre event; I thought it would be vile. It wasnt. In fact, as the actors moved approximately the cabin, regaling passengers back their stories, I was genuinely entertained. I liked the theme of female empowerment, as championed by the carrier, which ran through it. Truthfully, I dont remember having more fun upon a flight.

The professionals took the gain, naturally; airline employees played subter, acknowledge roles. The characters and their epoch-specific anecdotes (Ritchies far out account of the hippy trail, Valeries role in the feminist argument, for example) were neatly thought out and entertaining - and thus were their costumes. There was a bit of Icelandic folklore thrown in and dutiful storytelling approximately brand Icelandair (characters, we would learn, were based upon the intimates in the character of the airline).

The perform sort of fizzled out more than the Atlantic, taking into consideration one of the hippies campfires. Masks started to fade away, fatigue set in and the realities of talk to looking aviation started to bite; dehydration, discomfort, a weakening peace upon era and adherence deem not guilty trollies. Behind the facade it was have an effect on as okay.

By the time I had landed at New York and consent to a surly immigration proprietor scan my fingerprints, it had every felt along with than some weird goal; a viewpoint where, for one day without help, carried by the wind had been fun subsequent to more.
